The Boys Leadership Alliance is a gender specific, non-profit after school and summer camp program for boys age 5-18. The program is an informal education program that utilizes the game of football as a metaphor to teach STEM education, leadership, entrepreneurship, media and economic literacy as well as life and social skills to young men. The program also focuses on character education to help young men develop variously as moral, civic, good, mannered, behaved, non-bullying, healthy, critical, successful, traditional, compliant and/or socially acceptable beings. Adult male life coaches utilize evidence-based curriculums to facilitate boys in age-appropriate groups. The innovative curriculum helps boys and young men develop the skills and knowledge needed to confront life’s challenges and lead successful productive lives. The life coaches / mentors also provide homework assistance and tutoring during after school hours Monday-Friday. Although, registration is opened, Boys who enroll in the program at age 5 are encouraged to matriculate through the program through grade 12.
The program is divided into three (3) programming semesters: Sept-Dec; Jan-Jun; June-Aug. Parents / caregiver are required to register and enrolled their son in each semester thereby ensuring there is consistent staff and parent interaction.
Parent involvement is also a crucial and unique aspect of the BLA program. Parents are required to complete a registration form enrolling their sons into the BLA program. Parents are also required to sign an agreement to work with the BLA staff in the development of their sons. At the end of the after school or summer camp day a parent/caregiver or an adult authorized by the parent sign out the boy or young men. The ‘adult sign-out’ policy gives the staff an opportunity to engage parents / caregivers on a daily basis. However, the policy also guarantees that the boy or young man of color is under adult supervision when leaving the center, thereby avoiding enticement or bullying by gangs, other risky behaviors or dangers between the times they leave the center to the time the get home. BLA also make the structure program affordable for parents.
